November 23, 2023If the European Commission doesn’t change its approach, the protests by Polish carriers may spread to other border points beyond Poland, possibly involving carriers from Slovakia and Hungary as well. This is expected unless the Commission can promptly navigate a complex compromise, Farmer.pl reported.
It seems likely that dissatisfaction among Polish carriers could extend to various other border crossings if the European Commission doesn’t reconsider its current strategy. Additionally, farmers might also unite with the Polish carriers in their protests, as per Farmer’s report. Nevertheless, if an agreement isn’t reached, protests might emerge at other European Union border points. Carriers from several countries; Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania have appealed for a review of the eased regulations governing freight transport with Ukraine.
These carriers believe the removal of permit systems for Ukrainian carriers has led to an unfair market situation putting them at a disadvantage. Furthermore, dissatisfaction in other nations is escalating and could potentially result in similar protests. Already, Slovaks have organized a preliminary protest and Hungarians have indicated their readiness to join such movements.
Moreover, around 100 farmers are reportedly ready to support the Polish carriers’ protest by blocking another border crossing in Medyka. While backing the carriers, these farmers also aim to amplify their own grievances, particularly concerning the influx of Ukrainian grain affecting local agricultural prices. Ukrainian carriers have reportedly resorted to various forms of intimidation, not only targeting the carriers themselves but also their families. An incident involving a Polish truck being attacked with stones on the Ukrainian side of the border was reported. Additionally, Ukrainian carriers have sent letters threatening legal action against Polish entrepreneurs involved in protests, aiming to seek compensation for losses.
