September 8, 2023The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is considering the introduction of penalties for insulting military personnel.
The corresponding document has appeared on the website of the Ukrainian Parliament.
If the bill is passed, offenders could face fines of up to 5,100 hryvnias or be arrested for up to 15 days. They are proposed to be punished for disrespect publicly shown towards military personnel, offensive harassment of them or obstructing the exercise of their rights and freedoms.
“Disrespect for servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, other military formations formed in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Security Service of Ukraine, the State Security Service, and others, expressed in publicly demonstrated insult, offensive harassment or obstruction of the exercise of their rights and freedoms, shall entail a fine ranging from two hundred to three hundred non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens or community service for a period of fifty to sixty hours, or corrective labor for a period of one to two months with a deduction of twenty percent of earnings or community service for a period of two hundred and forty to three hundred and sixty days or administrative arrest for up to fifteen days,” according to the explanatory note to the bill.
