February 14, 2024By 2026, Ukraine is projected to lose about $120 billion in gross domestic product (GDP) and nearly a trillion dollars in fixed capital. These indicators were derived from an analysis of past war experiences.
This forecast is published by the Kyiv School of Economics.
The EU will also lose $70 billion in GDP, while non-belligerent third countries collectively will lose $250 billion. Among European nations, Germany will suffer the most, with losses estimated at $15-20 billion.
Researchers also forecasted losses in the event of a conflict over Taiwan: within five years, it would lead to a $2.2 trillion loss in global GDP. In the case of a war with Iran, losses could amount to $1.7 trillion.
It’s worth noting that due to the war, the World Bank has revised its forecast for Ukraine’s economic growth in 2024, lowering it to 3.2%. In October of the previous year, the bank expected the country’s GDP to increase by 4.0%. Additionally, it predicts that the war will continue into 2024.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, stated that Ukraine needs $42 billion in external financing this year.
