November 9, 2023Ukraine is making efforts to enlist a greater number of women into its military.
This information reported by The New York Times.
“Despite having the advantage of Western-supplied weaponry, Ukraine relies solely on its population as a reserve for replenishing its forces, whereas Russia’s population is about three times larger. Since so much depends on replenishing the ranks, efforts are being made to attract more Ukrainian women into the army,” explains the publication.
Journalists spoke with a group of volunteers offering combat training exclusively to women. “Women are capable of fighting on par with men while remaining feminine,” said Daria Trebukh, founder of the non-governmental group “Ukrainian Valkyrie,” which conducts the training.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, there are currently around 43,000 women serving in the Ukrainian army, approximately 40% more than in 2021.
“After the invasion, the military lifted restrictions that prevented women from holding positions such as machine gunners, tank commanders, snipers, and driving trucks. They also raised the age limit for female conscripts from 40 to 60, aligning it with the rules for men,” The New York Times reports.
It is worth noting that starting from October 1, Ukrainian women in medical and pharmaceutical professions are required to register at military enlistment offices. Those who already have military IDs need to update their information and undergo a medical examination.
