Countries from the Global South urge Ukraine to initiate direct talks with Russia, but Kyiv refuses

In the previous month, a covert gathering involving Ukraine, the G7, and several nations from the Global South aimed to push forward the Ukrainian “peace formula.” Bloomberg reports this, citing undisclosed sources.

Despite acknowledging Ukraine’s right to self-defense and its territorial integrity, the meeting did not yield substantial progress. Efforts by allies to gather support for Kyiv’s approach faltered, according to the agency.

During this meeting, Ukraine and its allies also resisted appeals from emerging countries to directly engage in discussions with Russia. The assembly of national security advisors took place on December 16 in Riyadh, attended by senior officials from India, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. While China, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates abstained from sending representatives. Soon, Ukraine will have another chance to hold negotiations with these nations during the upcoming Davos meeting.
