August 27, 2024Kyiv has started receiving extradited offenders from countries that previously refused to do so.
This was stated by Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin.
According to him, several countries stopped extraditing offenders at the beginning of the war, such as Germany. However, the first four individuals have already been extradited from there. Ukraine has also received its first citizens from Italy and Norway, countries that did not extradite offenders even before the war.
Kostin explained that each of these countries has its own judicial practice. The countries refused to extradite people for several reasons: distrust in a fair trial, the conditions of detention (which in some countries were equated to torture), and the state of war, which posed a danger to those being extradited.
“For most of the countries with which we have worked on this issue, all these safeguards have already disappeared. That is, most courts no longer accept this position of the defense,” said the Prosecutor General.
