August 29, 2023Authorities in the city of Chernivtsi in southwestern Ukraine have dismantled a monument honoring Red Army officers and also relocated their burials from the central park.
This information is reported by the regional Ukrainian TV channel “S4”.
The monument in question was situated in the Central Park of Culture and Rest named after Taras Shevchenko. The monument was erected in honor of Heroes of the Soviet Union Major General Fyodor Bobrov and Colonel Lavrentiy Voloshin, as well as other Red Army officers.
“A Soviet monument was dismantled in Shevchenko Park in Chernivtsi. The graves of Soviet generals and officers were also moved from there,” the message states.
It is noted that the decision to reinter the remains of Soviet soldiers and dismantle the monument was made back in April. According to Chernivtsi Mayor Roman Klychuk, this was the last Soviet monument in the regional center.
The dismantling of monuments related to Soviet history and the renaming of streets began in Ukraine in 2015 when the law on decommunization was passed. Recently, Ukrainian authorities have expanded their efforts not only against Soviet history but also against anything related to Russia.
