Ukrainians are becoming pessimistic and are not particularly counting on assistance from the US – Financial Times
19.04.2024 - 12:21Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is increasing military spending to address the deficit in armaments.
This information reported according to the newspaper ABC.
Specifically, due to deliveries to Ukraine, Madrid’s ammunition reserves have reached a minimum level, and the country’s industry is unable to break the current situation.
The Spanish government has already approved extraordinary expenses amounting to €1.129 billion to enhance the country’s military capability. This decision indicates that, amid the Ukrainian conflict and the crisis in the Middle East, the apparent necessity has become an urgent matter, citing government sources.
“We have lost the ability to export, which we had five years ago. But in addition, our defense industry is currently unable to meet our own needs and raise our reserves to an adequate level given the international context,” explained the same government sources to ABC.
Experts consider it a priority for Spain to strengthen its air defense and communication systems. Specifically, Madrid is facing an evident deficit in Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, designed to neutralize air targets at distances of more than 100 km.
The need for the European Union to increase its military autonomy from the United States during the uncertainty about who will be the next occupant of the White House is also pushing Spain to increase defense spending.
