September 7, 2023Last year, Elon Musk secretly deactivated the Starlink network along the coast of Crimea in order to thwart Ukraine’s attack with underwater drones on the Russian naval fleet.
This information is reported by Walter Isaacson in his new biography of Musk, as conveyed by CNN.
Explosive-laden drones had already approached the Russian fleet, but suddenly “lost connection and harmlessly washed ashore.”
“Musk’s decision, which led Ukrainian officials to plead with him to reactivate the satellites, was driven by a deep fear that Russia would respond to Ukraine’s attack on Crimea with nuclear weapons—a fear stemming from Musk’s conversations with high-ranking Russian officials,” Isaacson writes.
The publication claims that, with regard to events in Ukraine, Elon Musk became an influential figure involuntarily, one that American officials could not ignore. Following this incident, representatives of the White House expressed their concerns.
“How did I get into this war? Starlink was not intended for involvement in wars. It was created so that people could watch Netflix, relax, connect to the Internet at school, and do good, peaceful things—not carry out drone strikes,” Musk stated.
According to the TV channel, Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Mikhail Fedorov implored Musk to restore the connection. “I just want you—the person who is changing the world with technology—to know this,” the minister wrote to Musk.
Musk responded that he was impressed with the design of Ukrainian underwater drones but would not reinstate the connection because Ukraine “is going too far now and may suffer a strategic defeat.”
