Ukraine wants to introduce criminal liability for illegal border crossing during martial law
21.08.2025 05:03Europe is betting that the United States and Russia will not agree on the terms of a peace deal, and that no agreement will be reached.
This was reported by Politico.
According to the publication, Europe believes that Trump’s peace talks will fail. Its leaders assume that negotiations should continue in order for U.S. President Donald Trump to realize that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is bluffing. Europe’s plan is to play along with Trump, praise him, and indulge him until he himself understands that Putin does not want to end the war.
In connection with preparations for a possible meeting between Putin and Zelensky, European leaders held a “series of emergency talks” on Tuesday, the paper reported. Sources said “they expressed deep skepticism that the Kremlin would negotiate in good faith, but were optimistic that Washington would punish Russia if Putin turned out to be the main obstacle to peace.”
“Obviously, if we end up in a situation where Putin proves he does not want to end the war, it will force Trump to act and strengthen the case for sanctions,” a diplomat from one European country stated.
Earlier it was reported that about a dozen countries are ready to send troops to Ukraine as part of a peace settlement.
European leaders are also concerned that U.S. President Donald Trump, during his meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska, might strike a “dirty deal” and declare a diplomatic victory.
