Europe struggles with production of ammunition for Ukraine

Europe lacks the capacity to produce ammunition and gunpowder, which could delay the production of artillery shells for Ukraine.

According to Jean-Paul Moley from the Institute of International and Strategic Relations (IRIS), there are very few gunpowder manufacturers in Europe. Moley notes that many governments are currently working on relocating production from abroad.

European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton considers the main problem to be the lack of raw materials for gunpowder production in the EU.

“For this, a certain type of cotton is needed, which is mainly supplied from China. Supplies of this cotton from China were stopped several months ago, as if by chance,” Breton notes.
