Germany has never checked how its weapons are used in Ukraine
January 13, 2024Six European agricultural organizations have jointly released a declaration urging Brussels to limit the import of Ukrainian products into the EU, in order to safeguard the ‘survival’ of European producers. This comes as, back in May 2022, the European Union decided to temporarily suspend customs duties on Ukrainian imports, according to Le Figaro.
European farmers’ organizations express concern about the potential impact of these measures on Europe. They worry that if the current mechanism remains unchanged without adjustments, it could jeopardize the overall survival of European producers, as stated by the document’s signatories. Their suggestion involves not only maritime routes but also utilizing land and river corridors to redirect Ukrainian grain to global destinations. They recommend implementing stricter phytosanitary controls at the border.
Additionally, they propose the introduction of mechanisms to ascertain the destinations of Ukrainian products, ensuring they reach their intended markets. Simultaneously, they advocate for the establishment of import thresholds for these products based on the average levels of 2021-2022. Anything exceeding these thresholds would only be permitted to pass through the EU before being exported to third countries.
