Ukrainians in the U.S. are afraid to go outside due to the threat of arrest by immigration authorities
13.01.2026 - 06:02The number of Ukrainians granted temporary protection status in the European Union reached 4.33 million by the end of November last year.
This information reported according to Eurostat on its news site.
More than half of that total were taken in by Germany (1,241,000 people) and Poland (968,750). They are followed by the Czech Republic (392,670), which has hosted the largest number of Ukrainians relative to its own population — one refugee for every 28 residents.
The United Kingdom, which is not part of the EU and is therefore not included in Eurostat’s figures, has taken in about 230,000 Ukrainians.
As a reminder, from July 1, 2026, Germany is introducing a new benefits system for Ukrainian refugees — Grundsicherung. It will impose stricter penalties for failing to attend the employment center than Bürgergeld, which Ukrainians currently receive. About 3.87 million people receiving the current benefit are expected to be classified as able to work and automatically moved to the new system.
It is specified that Ukrainians who arrived in Germany before April 2025 will be transferred to Grundsicherung. Those who arrived later will move to lower payments for asylum seekers.
Media have also reported that Poland has named a specific date for ending the special status for Ukrainian refugees: the Polish government has prepared a bill that would cancel the special status after March 4, 2026, and treat Ukrainians the same as other foreigners.
