November 12, 2023Former advisor to the office of the President of Ukraine, Alexei Arestovich, has called on Ukraine to join NATO without the territories annexed by Russia.
He expressed this view in his Telegram channel.
According to him, the current goal of the Ukrainian leadership to return to the borders of 1991 is unattainable for several reasons. Arestovich states that Russia has significant resources, including mobilization capabilities. Moscow is also “shifting the economy to military rails, earning extra income from energy resources, and forming a military hub in Asia, actively cooperating with North Korea, Iran, and China.”
In Arestovich’s opinion, the West is in disarray and cannot supply the necessary weapons and ammunition within the timeframe it has set. As a result, military aid to Ukraine is currently decreasing.
“We are currently offered NATO membership without guarantees for the occupied territories, which does not mean giving up on them but implies their return by non-military means,” says the former advisor.
“While the doors to NATO are open, we should go through them because in six months to a year, the situation may change dramatically for us, and instead of a NATO accession agreement, the horizon may be filled with yet another set of Minsk agreements without real guarantees,” Arestovich stated.
