17.08.2026 09:35The conflict between Russia and Ukraine will most likely end with a ceasefire rather than a full-fledged peace treaty.
This forecast was made by former Dutch ambassador to Kyiv Robert Serry in an interview with Ukrinform.
“It will most likely end with a ceasefire, not a peace. That is a very important distinction. I think it is unlikely that after everything that has happened, Russia and Ukraine will be able to conclude a full-fledged peace treaty. The best one can hope for is a durable ceasefire,” Serry said.
As historical analogies, the former ambassador cited the situation on the Korean Peninsula, where North and South Korea never concluded a peace treaty, as well as relations between India and Pakistan.
The day before, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that any long-term peace in Europe cannot be achieved by manipulating Ukraine. According to him, Europe, including Poland, must hold a “prominent place” at the negotiating table. The head of the Polish Foreign Ministry also stressed that Europeans cannot pretend to be “neutral arbiters,” since they are not.
