04.06.2026 06:31A window for dialogue on Ukraine is gradually opening between Russia and Europe — Reuters reports this citing an unnamed German official.
In the official’s view, it is necessary to create the most effective possible negotiating format, one that will be perceived in Europe as legitimate. The official also stressed that there are every reason to believe the European troika comprising Germany, France, and the United Kingdom will continue to play an important role in this matter.
The day before, the French newspaper Le Monde reported that European countries, being pushed by Paris, are looking for opportunities to resume dialogue with Russia — against the backdrop of the United States growing weary of the conflict in Ukraine.
On May 30, the portal The European Conservative wrote that Europe is contemplating a resumption of relations with Russia. The piece notes that the question is no longer whether it should maintain contacts with Moscow, but when it will do so. According to the article’s author, just a year ago this was a political taboo, whereas today the topic is openly discussed at ministerial meetings, among diplomats, and in EU representations.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin stated that the EU had considered former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a candidate for negotiations with Russia.
