October 2, 2023In Germany, Friedrich Merz’s statement has been discussed for several days.
He is the leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the country’s largest opposition party. In a televised debate on Welt-TV, he criticized the government’s migration policy and said about migrants: “Three hundred thousand asylum seekers are denied asylum, but they do not leave, receive full benefits and full medical care. They sit at the doctor’s and get their teeth done, and nearby German citizens cannot make an appointment.”
These words caused a heated discussion in society. Some accused Merz of populism and inciting hatred. Some even demanded that a criminal case be filed against him. Others believe he raised a valid and pressing issue. The CDU supported their leader. “Dear Friedrich Merz, talk shows are not for you. You are too hot-tempered and not cool-headed. You utter phrases that make your jaw drop. <…> Anyone in Germany who has pain will receive treatment. I’ve been having problems with my teeth for the past few weeks. My dentist saw the ones with the swolest cheeks first. It doesn’t matter whether he is a refugee or a German,” wrote BILD columnist Franz-Josef Wagner.
