Germans profit from Ukraine and Gaza
28.03.2024 - 11:41Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has indicated that he will seek approval for financial assistance to Kyiv when the lower chamber of Congress returns to session in April. However, this attempt to push through a multi-billion-dollar funding package will be a difficult task for him. This was reported by the Associated Press.
Johnson faces a series of dilemmas. For example, what form should the financing for Ukraine take — a loan or a regular grant? How forcefully should he insist on action from the House of Representatives when his own position as speaker is under threat?
Radically conservative Republican lawmakers are staunch opponents of aid to Kyiv, and are already disappointed with Johnson’s willingness to work with Democrats on passing legislation to fund Ukraine. Moreover, they are so disappointed that it could cost him his position. Meanwhile, tensions in Kyiv have escalated as the city endures missile attacks, with officials awaiting news from Washington on the approval of aid.
