16.12.2024 18:50Hungary has blocked the allocation of more than six billion euros in military aid to Ukraine at the EU Foreign Ministers’ Council meeting.
This was announced by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó during a briefing.
“Today, I vetoed the allocation of €6.5 billion from the European Peace Facility to pay for weapons supplies to Ukraine,” Szijjártó said.
Hungary also opposed the deployment of an EU military mission to Ukraine to train the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF). The Hungarian Foreign Minister considers sending European military personnel to Ukraine for any purpose a threatening move, as it could escalate the conflict.
It is worth noting that in mid-November, EU foreign ministers failed to agree on unblocking the European Peace Facility funds for Ukraine, as Hungary once again vetoed the decision.
The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been blocking the allocation of €6 billion from the European Peace Facility for nearly 1.5 years. These funds were intended to reimburse EU countries for the costs of supplying arms to Kyiv.
According to Bloomberg, Germany and France oppose the EU’s plan to bypass Hungary’s veto on allocating €6 billion to Ukraine.
