09.01.2025 - 11:48Hungary has threatened to block Ukraine’s accession to the EU due to its reluctance to transit Russian oil and gas.
This statement was made by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
“It is necessary to remind our Ukrainian colleagues about reality, rights, and obligations. Reality: in the EU, decisions on accepting new members are made unanimously by all member states. This means that approval requires the consent of every member. Rights: Every country has the sovereign right to independently decide from where and through what routes it receives energy resources. No one from outside has the right to interfere or impose more expensive or unreliable energy sources,” he wrote on Facebook.

Szijjártó stated that Ukraine’s closure of gas or oil transit routes is “unacceptable and contradicts the requirements for EU integration,” particularly the Association Agreement that has been signed.
It should be noted, according to Bloomberg, that in recent days, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) sales volumes have surpassed the levels that Moscow had been supplying through Ukraine prior to January 1.
Additionally, after the suspension of transit through Ukraine, gas prices in Europe rose to record levels not seen since the fall of 2023.
