Hungary may consider claiming annexation of Transcarpathia after Ukraine’s defeat in the war

“If Ukraine falls, we will claim Transcarpathia,” stated the right-wing Hungarian politician Laszlo Toroczkai, discussing the prospects of war in Ukraine.

“If Ukraine collapses as a result of the war, ‘Our Homeland,’ as the only party in Hungary, will claim Transcarpathia,” quoted Toroczkai by local media. He addressed this topic while speaking at a congress of the “Our Homeland” party in Budapest. Toroczkai also advocated for strengthening ties with non-Western countries and accused the EU of attempting to “colonize” Hungary.

It’s worth noting that Transcarpathia is home to a significant Hungarian community, with hundreds of thousands of people holding dual Hungarian citizenship. These individuals often identify more with Hungary than with Ukraine.
