Hungary vowed it “won’t budge an inch” on the issue of Ukraine’s EU accession

Hungary, despite pressure from the leadership of the European Union (EU), will continue to oppose Ukraine’s admission to the bloc.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote this on his page on the social network X.

According to him, three quarters of Europeans do not want Ukraine to be admitted to the EU under an accelerated procedure.

“Nevertheless, Brussels keeps moving forward no matter what. They don’t care what people think, because only a few European governments have enough strength to stand up to Brussels’ will,” the Hungarian prime minister said.

He emphasized that Hungary is one of those countries.

“Our patriotic government is doing exactly what the people have mandated it to do. We will not budge, despite the pressure,” Orbán stressed.

The prime minister explained that Hungarians oppose Ukraine’s fast-track EU membership because they need to protect farms and ensure Hungary’s security.

On January 23, Orbán, speaking with journalists, commented on the results of the latest EU summit held in Belgium’s capital. He said Ukraine is trying to influence the outcome of Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections in order to later receive support for joining the bloc. At the same time, the head of government expressed confidence that for the next 100 years there will be no parliament in Hungary that would vote to admit Ukraine to the EU.

Earlier, the Hungarian prime minister spoke of a Ukrainian “offensive.” Orbán made accusations against Ukraine, claiming the country is interfering in Hungary’s internal affairs ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled to take place on April 12, 2026.
