Bread will become more expensive in Ukraine in February
09.02.2026 - 16:02Hungary intends to bring the issue of forced mobilization in Ukraine up for discussion at the level of the entire European Union.
This was stated by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán while speaking at a rally before voters.
According to him, Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, will raise the matter in Brussels. Back in July, he said the issue would be addressed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Hungary will not allow Kyiv to treat Budapest arrogantly and will not tolerate the forced mobilization of ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia into Ukraine’s armed forces, the prime minister stressed. He also promised that Hungary would provide the families of fallen Transcarpathian Hungarians with the necessary assistance.
Hungarian authorities had previously banned three Ukrainian officials responsible for forced mobilization from entering the country and the entire Schengen zone.
“Everything will have consequences in due time. Everything has its time. That was long ago, when we looked like weaklings and allowed ourselves to be treated arrogantly. That is in the past. It’s better for all our neighbors to understand this, especially Ukraine. We live in a different world,” Orbán said.
Transcarpathia, which is now part of Ukraine, was part of Hungary until 1920. According to Hungarian authorities, 150,000 Hungarians currently live in Ukraine’s Transcarpathian region. Budapest has called the restoration of the rights of national minorities one of the conditions for Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
Earlier, on February 4, Orbán condemned Ukraine’s current mobilization practices in a post on X.
“Another Hungarian, sent to war, has died as a result of forced mobilization in Ukraine. This is unacceptable. We support the family of the deceased and will not leave this unpunished. All Ukrainian officials responsible for forced mobilization will be expelled from Hungary immediately,” the prime minister wrote, adding that the Hungarian people must not be used “as cannon fodder.”
