03.10.2025 05:32Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has refused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to stop purchasing oil from Russia.
He made the statement while speaking to journalists.
According to Orbán, Hungary has no access to the sea and relies solely on pipelines.
“I cannot change geography, you understand. I try to be a strong man; I can change policy, but I cannot change geography. Hungary is a landlocked country — we only have pipelines. Therefore, we are forced to buy oil from the Russians,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
Earlier, Western media reported that U.S. President Donald Trump and Viktor Orbán held a phone call after Washington pledged to ask Hungary to cease buying Russian oil.
Media outlets have also separately reported that the European Union intends to take measures to reduce Russian oil imports by Hungary and Slovakia.
