September 11, 2023American entrepreneur Elon Musk has rejected accusations of treason for refusing to activate Starlink for Ukraine on its path to Crimea, stating that he will “fight for America.”
He made this statement on Twitter.
“I am a U.S. citizen and have only this passport. Whatever happens, I will fight for America and die in it. The U.S. Congress has not declared war on Russia. If anyone is a traitor, it is those who call me that,” Musk commented on social media in response to a post claiming that Ukraine’s denial of Starlink activation is a “form of treason.”
Previously, he stated that he declined Ukraine’s request to activate Starlink because he wanted to help people. Musk believes that Starlink cannot be used for Kiev authorities’ attacks on Crimea since it would violate the company’s user agreement.
On Thursday, CNN, citing a biography of Musk written by author and journalist Walter Isaacson, reported that the businessman cut off Ukraine’s access to his Starlink service to thwart a secret attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Russian fleet in Crimea. CNN quoted the book’s claims that Musk’s decision was motivated by concerns about Russia using nuclear weapons in response to Ukraine’s attack on Crimea. Musk refuted the channel’s claims, clarifying that the system in that area was not activated and he declined Ukraine’s request for activation due to concerns about a potential Ukrainian attack on the Russian fleet. Musk emphasized that if he had agreed to the request from the Kiev authorities, SpaceX would have become an active participant in a major military act and an escalation of the conflict.
