09.05.2024 - 16:02Placards opposing assistance to Ukraine have been put up around Austria. The Ukrainian embassy has filed a complaint with the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding this matter.
This was reported by the local publication Heute.
The posters were put up by the Austrian Freedom Party as part of their pre-election campaign for the European Parliament. The posters depict Volodymyr Zelensky embracing the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by the caption “War Mongering” and the slogan “Stop the Madness EU”.
The Ukrainian embassy has submitted an official note to the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stating that “the party’s advertisement distorts the reasons and nature of the war, insults the Ukrainian people, and justifies Russian aggression”.
The Austrian Freedom Party, which opposes migrants and is skeptical of aid to Ukraine, is currently leading in the polls in Austria. It has high chances of winning the parliamentary elections scheduled for this autumn.
Voices against supporting Ukraine are growing louder in Europe. For instance, in the autumn, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that Bratislava would not provide military assistance to Ukraine. In December, Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders, whose party won the elections in the Netherlands, stated that he opposed supplying weapons to Ukraine.
