07.10.2024 - 15:40Donald Trump’s book “The Art of the Deal” may offer insight into how he plans to address the conflict in Ukraine if he wins the November elections.
This is the view of columnist Joe Barnes in an article for the British newspaper “The Telegraph”.
According to Barnes, Trump holds “an abundance of leverage” over both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Firstly, Trump holds the “keys to Ukraine’s NATO membership,” which is a significant concern for both Kyiv and Moscow. Barnes suggests that Trump could offer Zelensky a compromise—agreeing to a U.S.-backed military intervention in case of a future Russian attack on Ukraine, instead of NATO membership.
Secondly, Trump could encourage both sides, who have been pursuing maximalist goals, to adopt more moderate, and thus more realistic, objectives. Trump has previously stated that Kyiv might need to “give a little,” meaning potentially ceding some territories in exchange for a peaceful settlement. However, Barnes acknowledges that it is unclear what Moscow would need to concede for the deal to be acceptable to Ukrainians.
To expedite a deal, Trump, according to the author, would likely push Kyiv and its allies toward compromises that may find few supporters. However, Trump would undoubtedly present his proposals as “the best deal,” even if many may not see it that way, Barnes concludes.
