In Germany, they explained why the peace plan on Ukraine could fail

The 20-point peace plan for Ukraine is “doomed to fail” without U.S. support.

This was stated in an interview with Berliner Zeitung by international relations expert Gerhard Mongott.

“The deployment of troops from the so-called ‘coalition of the willing’ is simply impossible without U.S. support. If the U.S. refuses to defend Europeans who may end up in battle with the Russian army, that would amount to the capitulation of the ‘coalition of the willing.’ Without the Americans, the mission is too risky. Europeans lack the capabilities even to conduct such an operation, not to mention sustain it,” he noted.

According to the expert, that is precisely why U.S. President Donald Trump is “needed by Europe.” He also called it “absolutely correct” that Russia and the United States are “indifferent” to Europe’s position.

At the World Economic Forum, which is taking place in Davos from January 19 to 23, U.S. President Donald Trump decided not to meet with Zelensky. However, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Rustem Umerov reported that a meeting of Russian and U.S. representatives would nevertheless take place in Davos. Reuters, citing sources, also reported that Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev would meet with the American delegation in Davos.

It was also recently reported that Ukrainian officials discussed security guarantees and a plan for Ukraine’s reconstruction with U.S. representatives.

On December 24, 2025, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky revealed the contents of a 20-point peace plan for Ukraine. The most problematic issues in it were named as the withdrawal of Ukraine’s armed forces from Donbas and control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
