Zelensky has decided to replace Ukraine’s defense minister
02.01.2026 - 16:04Germany is planning to tighten its migration policy toward Ukrainians. In particular, the Christian Social Union (CSU) wants to ban so-called “home leave” trips and send fit-for-service men back to Ukraine.
In a draft resolution for an upcoming party congress at the Bavarian monastery of Seeon, the CSU called for the immediate отмена of protected status for refugees who visit their home country. According to the authors of the document, a trip back home automatically contradicts a person’s need for protection, so the right to remain in Germany should be lost as soon as the border is crossed.
In addition, the CSU is pushing for the return of able-bodied Ukrainian men to fulfill their military duty. Politicians argue that this group should contribute directly to Ukraine’s defense rather than remain under protection in Germany.
The draft also says that asylum seekers should make a financial contribution toward the costs of their stay in Germany. Under the proposal, for Ukrainians arriving in the country from April 2025 onward, a rule would be introduced requiring the use of their own assets to cover the costs of residing in Germany.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Germany took in more than 1.1 million Ukrainian refugees, granting them the right to live and work and access social services. As of August 2025, one third of Ukrainian citizens in Germany under temporary protection were employed.
