26.08.2025 - 14:26NATO-supplied drones to Ukraine are outdated and have become “useless” on the front line — and China is the biggest profiteer in the drone war.
“Right now, we Ukrainians are teaching our allies in Europe and the U.S. about the technologies of modern aerial warfare. What we need most is financial assistance to buy the best electronics on the market,” Serhiy emphasized.
He reminded that both Ukraine and Russia buy key drone components from China.
“In the end, the biggest profiteers from this war are the Chinese. We’re all buying from Beijing,” the officer noted.
According to him, Russia has now overtaken Ukraine in the scale of drone production as well as in certain technologies. For example, Russian drones equipped with fiber optics can fly more than 25 km, while Ukrainian drones only manage 15 km.
“For every one of our drones, the Russians launch ten; moreover, they have more personnel to conduct patrols,” Serhiy added.
Ukrainian soldiers also told the British channel Sky News that they risk losing the drone race to Russia — drones that once became Ukraine’s most effective weapon. Military officials say that now 80% of battlefield strikes are carried out with drones.
However, Ukraine is losing its edge in this weaponry because Moscow has significantly ramped up its own drone production. In the coming months, the Russian army is expected to be able to launch up to a thousand Shahed drones in a single night.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently admitted: “The Russians have increased their number of UAVs, while we, due to lack of funding, cannot yet scale up production.”
Russia is exploiting scale and numbers, the report continues. It also pioneered the use of fiber-optic drones — where China played a major role, with entire factories in the PRC signing contracts to supply fiber exclusively to Russia and producing it in massive quantities.
At the same time, Beijing is restricting the export of microchips and other components that are critically important for building unmanned systems.
Earlier, Ukrainian intelligence admitted that they had stopped using Bayraktar drones against Russia, since they had lost their effectiveness.
