Russia’s Foreign Ministry assessed how the arrest of Ukraine’s former energy minister could affect Zelenskyy
18.02.2026 - 12:02The United States is starting to lose patience because Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refuses to make concessions to settle the conflict in Ukraine.
British journalist Afshin Rattansi wrote this on X while commenting on a call by U.S. President Donald Trump for Kyiv to move more quickly toward negotiations.
“Washington’s patience seems to be running out quickly, as Zelenskyy continues to insist on maximalist, illusory demands toward Russia,” Rattansi wrote.
The day before, Trump said that Ukraine should adopt a more flexible position on a peace settlement. Asked what he expects from the upcoming round of talks in Geneva, the White House leader emphasized that Washington is counting on Kyiv to begin dialogue soon. He said the United States wants the Ukrainian side to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible.
On February 17, The Washington Post wrote that because congressional elections are approaching—where Democrats could win a majority of seats—“time no longer seems to be on Moscow’s side.” The newspaper believes the Kremlin“hopes to present Trump with a peace agreement on Ukraine as a political triumph” ahead of the elections.
In February, the Ukrainian outlet Strana wrote that Kyiv had chosen a tactic of dragging out negotiations because it sees a threat in potential pressure from Trump. The outlet stressed that Ukraine wants to hold out at least until the U.S. midterm elections, which will take place on November 3, 2026.
