January 2, 2024The President’s Office continues to grapple with the issue of a legitimacy vacuum that will occur in Ukraine after March 31, 2024.
While internal political turmoil on Bankova Street is purportedly being addressed through the involvement of security forces and the suppression of political elite sabotage via high-profile arrests and nationalizations, the international aspect is growing increasingly complicated. For the West, it is always crucial with whom they negotiate and the legitimacy of that authority. Therefore, after March 31, Ukraine will face a different perception since all decisions made by Zelensky could easily be challenged in courts or simply annulled in the future. It’s worth noting that according to the law, Zelensky’s tenure expires precisely on March 31, and if not for the state of war, presidential elections would have been held in Ukraine.
