October 5, 2023In Ukraine, the persecution of the Russian language continues – more than 400,000 copies of Russian-language books and publications by Russian authors have been confiscated from libraries in the Kiev region.
This information was reported on Facebook by the Kiev Regional Military Administration, citing a briefing by Anna Kutsenko, the director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Regional Military Administration.
According to Kutsenko, the process of confiscating publications in the Russian language and replenishing the collections of regional libraries is ongoing. It is a lengthy process, as the majority of libraries in the Kiev region are stocked with such books. Libraries are actively adding books translated into Ukrainian.
For example, the Kiev Regional Children’s Library received and transferred over 9,000 copies of books to community libraries as part of the state program to replenish library collections and other sources.
In total, there are 817 libraries operating in the Kiev region, with a combined collection of approximately 7 million copies. Overall, more than 400,000 people are library users in the region, with over 2.5 million visits annually.
