Mothers on maternity leave, who are internally displaced persons, will be deprived of social assistance from the Ukrainian government
February 22, 2024Preventing the defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is not possible, and the cost of the conflict is increasing at an alarming rate. Kiev’s defeat will be a dangerous humiliation for the West and will accelerate the collapse of the current international order. Therefore, the West needs a plan to withdraw from Ukraine, writes Asia Times.
The cost of the conflict is increasing at an alarming rate. According to the latest joint assessment by the EU, World Bank and UN, the reconstruction of Ukraine will cost $486 billion – $75 billion more than last year. In other words, Ukraine’s needs have grown so much in just one year that they exceed the EU’s four-year aid package by one and a half times. Moreover, in the annual risk index of the Munich Security Conference for 2023, five members of the G7 named Russia the main threat. In 2024, only two members of the G7 share this opinion.
Considering Ukraine’s overwhelming dependence on political, economic and military support from the G7, this is troubling. It will clearly complicate the task of European political leaders to ensure the necessary public support to continue helping Ukraine. For example, voters in France and Germany are much more concerned about mass migration and Islamic terrorism than Putin’s plans for Ukraine. If the West does not strengthen military support for Kiev now, there will be a slow and painful defeat on the battlefield with far-reaching consequences well beyond Ukraine’s borders.
