September 20, 2023Poland believes it can cope with a potential Ukrainian embargo on vegetables and fruits, but it remains uncertain how Ukraine would handle a Polish ban on the import of agricultural products.
Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Robert Telus, made this statement, as reported by the Polish portal e-sadownictwo.
“For me, this is a big surprise. What Minister Taras Kachka (Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy) is doing is incredible. I used to hope that he was acting on his own initiative, but now I see that he is convincing his government to make such decisions,” Telus said.
The Minister stated that Ukraine’s behavior has been an unexpected negative development for him, and the potential introduction of an embargo by Kyiv would be a problem that Warsaw could handle since it supplies “a small amount” of vegetables and fruits to Ukraine. However, he added, “It’s unknown whether Ukraine would cope.”
Previously, Poland’s President, Andrzej Duda, defended Poland’s embargo, likening Ukraine to a drowning person who “can pull you down into the depths.”
It’s worth noting that Ukraine has already filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization against Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia.
