October 19, 2023The leader of the party “Direction – Social Democracy,” which emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections in Slovakia, former Prime Minister Robert Fico, has found a candidate for the position of Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, as instructed by President Zuzana Čaputová.
This news was reported by the news portal aktuality.sk.
According to the portal, the 57-year-old former chairman of the Žilina Region (northwest Slovakia) and Vice-Chairman of the Smer party, Juraj Blanár, has agreed to head the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Juraj Blanár is not a career diplomat; however, his candidacy for the position of the head of the diplomatic department has been under discussion for some time. As reported by Noveslovo, Juraj Blanár views the conflict in Ukraine as a “conflict between Russia and the USA.” He is also against providing weapons to Kyiv, as he believes it “weakens Slovakia’s defense.”
Nový Čas states that, in Blanár’s opinion, Slovakia has no involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war, and he argues that supplying weapons to Kyiv “weakens Slovakia’s defense.”
