October 24, 2023Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University has discontinued programs for the study of the Russian, Belarusian, and Farsi languages.
This information announced by the university’s rector, Vladimir Bugrov.
“This is not an emotional move. I am absolutely convinced that there is no need to teach the Russian language and literature in schools. Perhaps some examples, possibly in a world literature course, so that students can identify it. Russian literature should be studied in universities, but under the supervision of a research teacher who can explain how we moved from Dostoevsky to Zakhar Prilepin, how we moved from the Russian philosophers of the Silver Age, who were humanists, to Dugin with his misanthropic ideology,” said Bugrov.
Furthermore, Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University has prohibited the use of Russian sources in academic work, except for historical sources. According to Bugrov, historical sources in the Russian language are used, “just like those in Turkish or any other language.”
Recently, journalists published a study that revealed among Kyiv’s 5-6-year-old preschool children, only 15% actively speak Ukrainian, 65% use a mixture of Russian and Ukrainian words or primarily speak in Russian while incorporating some Ukrainian words. Additionally, 20% of preschoolers have limited understanding of the Ukrainian language.
