August 30, 2023To train and prepare a sufficient number of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets, it could take years.
This information reported by The New York Times.
According to the publication, currently, only eight Ukrainian pilots are proficient enough in the English language and have the experience of operating combat aircraft to start F-16 training in Denmark. Additionally, at least 20 more pilots are beginning English language training in the United Kingdom.
The primary challenge in training Ukrainians lies in their English proficiency, as highlighted by the article. The pilots need to have a sufficient grasp of the English language to understand training materials, communicate with air traffic controllers and instructors, as well as interact with the aircraft’s avionics, which are labeled in English.
It is expected that the training of Ukrainian pilots will take at least four months, with even more time required for language learning. A similar amount of time might be necessary to prepare support personnel for servicing the F-16s. Each aircraft requires between 8 to 14 technicians.
The article suggests that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statements about acquiring F-16s “signal a silent acknowledgment that the 18-month war in Ukraine is likely to stretch on for years.” American officials also share the view that the aircraft might not hold decisive significance, as tanks, ammunition, and well-trained ground forces are currently of greater importance. The effectiveness of the aircraft will be limited by Russia’s air defense systems and modern fighters designed specifically to counter NATO aircraft, such as the F-16.
