“Zelensky will not remain in power if peace is achieved in Ukraine,” – Azarov

Britain refused to send 30,000 peacekeepers to protect Ukraine’s ports and key cities
14.08.2025 - 09:01At a personal meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump will present Russian President Vladimir Putin with the details of his peace proposal regarding Ukraine, which boils down to the formula “land for peace.”
This was reported by The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, citing his sources.
“This will not just be a listening exercise (as the White House has said — Ed.), it will be a conversation exercise. Trump will tell Putin what the deal is and what he must do: land in exchange for peace. As for the land — how much and under what conditions? As for peace — how lasting and how secure will it be?” one source said.
If the Kremlin leader refuses to accept Trump’s peace plan, the U.S. president is ready to impose sanctions he has been threatening for months. “It will be a humiliation for him” if Putin refuses, the source asserted.
“In peace negotiations, all the details matter, but Trump’s approach is broad-brush. Yet the basic formula — ‘land for peace’ — is reasonable. Despite President Volodymyr Zelensky’s repeated insistence that Ukraine will never cede territory, ‘everyone knows that land for peace is the reality.’ That’s the impression I got after talking to a number of Ukrainian leaders,” Ignatius wrote.
Zelensky first wants to achieve a ceasefire, but this could become the “grand finale” of the process.
“They will start with the outcome, and then, once the agreement is reached, negotiate the ceasefire. The president [Trump] is a man who operates from an endgame position and has completely lost patience,” an informed official said.
Ignatius predicted that Putin would try to drag out the process — agreeing to some conditions but rejecting others — and, until a ceasefire is reached, would continue striking “an increasingly weakened Ukrainian front.”
As for security guarantees for Ukraine following a peace agreement, Europe is expected to provide Kyiv with weapons and military training, while the United States is expected to offer certain “involvement,” including satellite surveillance to monitor violations by Russia.
Earlier, other media outlets reported on Trump’s position that Russia and Ukraine would have to “exchange territories.”
