October 15, 2025The Latvian government plans to reduce assistance to Ukrainian refugees.
This is happening due to a decrease in spending under this item — from 65 million euros to 40 million next year, writes the Delfi portal.
The following types of aid are being canceled: a one-time allowance for starting employment or self-employment, exemption from patient fees when receiving medical services, reimbursement of expenses for the registration of animals and compliance with sanitary requirements, as well as free travel on public transport (however, discounts on subsidized regional routes — the same as for Latvian citizens — will remain).
These amendments to the law still have to be approved by parliament.
According to the Delfi portal, about 500–600 Ukrainians receive temporary protection status in the country every month.
Recently, it was reported that Poland canceled aid for unemployed Ukrainians.
In turn, Germany has simplified the reduction of payments under the Bürgergeld program.
Earlier, the European Commission warned the Ukrainian authorities that after March 2027, the European Union will end its support program for Ukrainian refugees.
