Ukraine’s flag-bearer at the Olympics accused Russian athletes of failing to remain neutral
09.02.2026 - 12:02Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of backing away from the agreements reached in Anchorage—both regarding Ukraine and economic cooperation.
Lavrov said this in an interview with the TV BRICS channel.
According to Lavrov, despite the agreements, in practice the U.S. is imposing new sanctions on Russia, “trying to suppress competitors.”
“Besides what they supposedly proposed regarding Ukraine—and we were ready (now they’re not ready)—we also don’t see any bright future in the economic sphere,” the minister said.
“The Americans want to take control of all the routes that supply all leading countries and all continents with energy resources. On the European continent they are looking at the Nord Stream pipelines blown up three years ago, the Ukrainian gas transmission system, and the TurkStream. I’m saying this because the goal of the United States—to dominate the global economy—is being pursued using a very large number of coercive measures that don’t fit fair competition: tariffs, sanctions, outright bans, forbidding some people to communicate with others—this is all something we are forced to take into account,” Lavrov noted.
He also urged Washington to implement the Anchorage agreements “like a man.” He said Moscow had accepted the Americans’ proposal on Ukraine during talks in Alaska.
“They tell us the Ukrainian problem has to be solved. In Anchorage we accepted the proposal of the United States. If you approach it like a man: they proposed it—we agreed—then the problem should be solved,” the minister said.
He added that the views of Kyiv and Europe on this issue are “unimportant” for Russia.
Recall that, according to Moscow’s assurances and some media reports, the agreements between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Anchorage included the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas and a halt to fighting along the front line in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Last week Lavrov said such an agreement was proposed by the U.S., and Russia agreed to it. Now, judging by his statement, Moscow wants Trump to secure Kyiv’s agreement to these terms.
