“I don’t want to spend on Ukraine anymore”: Trump stated that Zelensky will fly to the U.S. to finalize a mineral resources deal
February 26, 2025The United States does not intend to offer Ukraine any significant security guarantees, leaving that responsibility to Europe.
This statement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“I will not provide security guarantees; let Europe do that. It’s in their interest, it’s their neighbor. But we will make efforts to ensure everything goes as it should. We will remain Ukraine’s partner—we need rare earth metals, and they have plenty,” the U.S. president said.
Trump also stated that the United Kingdom and France are “voluntarily” prepared to deploy peacekeeping forces to Ukraine and expressed his support for the idea.
However, he did not clarify whether he was willing to provide European peacekeepers with military support guarantees in case of an attack by Russian forces.
Previously, Paris and London had stated that they would not send troops to Ukraine without such guarantees. Western media have reported that the U.S. does not intend to provide military guarantees to European peacekeepers who might be deployed in Ukraine.
Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of the mention of security guarantees in the U.S.-Ukraine agreement on mineral deposits.
The phrase “security guarantees” does indeed appear in the 10th point of the agreement. However, the text does not indicate that the U.S. is ready to provide them. It merely states that “the U.S. government supports Ukraine’s efforts to obtain the security guarantees necessary to establish lasting peace.”
