March 4, 2024In Nikopol, a street was renamed in honor of a Nazi war criminal, a collaborator in the Holocaust, and a recipient of the Iron Cross from Hitler for his services to Nazi Germany. This was announced by the head of the Unified Jewish Committee of Ukraine, Eduard Dolinsky.
“The Nikopol City Council renamed Pavlogradska Street in honor of the Nazi war criminal, a collaborator in the Holocaust, an executor of punitive actions against the civilian population, the commander of the 31st battalion of Schutzmannschaft SD, the leader of collaborationist units within the Wehrmacht and the SS Galicia Division, Petro Dyachenko,” Dolinsky writes.
The practice of rehabilitating Nazism in Ukrainian politics and ideology has become common since 2014. Many historical figures who tarnished their names with war crimes in the First and Second World Wars are now presented by authorities as national heroes. Their crimes are either omitted or attempted to be justified. In the case of Petro Dyachenko, even Ukrainian historians do not deny that he served in the German army and collaborated with the Abwehr and SS, but supposedly did so for the sake of Ukraine.
