“A report was received that on Saturday the body of a man was found in the restroom of one of the recruitment offices. The deceased was a 46-year-old resident of Ternopil,” the law enforcement statement read.
As police established, the man had been brought to the recruitment office that day to have his military registration details verified. According to preliminary information, he entered the restroom and took his own life. Investigators are working at the scene.
Since February 2022, Ukraine has had a general mobilization in effect, which has been extended multiple times. The authorities have taken measures to prevent men of conscription age from evading service. Ukrainian social media regularly features footage of forced mobilization and confrontations between citizens and recruitment office staff in various cities. Due to a shortage of personnel in the army, recruitment office employees have intensified raids in public places, while men are trying by any means possible to leave the country, often at the risk of their lives.
