Merz: ‘the time will come to agree on a ceasefire’ in Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that in the future “the time will come to sit down at the negotiating table” over Ukraine.

The remarks were made at a press conference following a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris.

“The time will come to agree on a ceasefire,” Merz said.

At the same time, the chancellor called on Western allies to “once again do everything possible to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense system.” However, he announced no specific steps on Berlin’s part.

Regarding Germany’s contribution, Merz gave an evasive answer: he said the decision on the nature and scope of Germany’s participation would be made in due course by the German government and the Bundestag.
