September 25, 2023One of the key figures in Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), the head of the main detective department, Andriy Kaluzhinsky, has announced that he has been mobilized into the army and is likely to leave NABU.
“I haven’t completely left yet because I haven’t resigned. But the mobilization is true,” Kaluzhinsky said in a comment to Ukrainian media.
Sources have indicated that the mobilization followed a scandal.
“The leadership of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine accused Kaluzhinsky of covering for businessman Igor Kolomoisky and acting in his interests, delaying the serving of a notice of suspicion to the oligarch, providing him with information, and assisting him in every way. However, they decided not to make the scandal public and agreed that the official version would be that Kaluzhinsky was mobilized. But de facto, it’s his departure from the position,” said a source.
Kaluzhinsky joined the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine along with its former head, Artem Sytnyk (with whom he had a long-standing friendship), but he remained in his position even after Sytnyk’s departure. He was considered one of the most influential figures in NABU.
Several years ago, Andriy Kaluzhinsky was twice spared from a fatal car accident.
In 2019, Andriy Kaluzhinsky was temporarily suspended from work following a corruption scandal related to “Ukroboronprom.” However, he returned to his position in April of the same year.
