September 16, 2023As of the morning of September 15th, more than 32,332 Hasidic pilgrims have arrived in the city of Uman in the Cherkasy region to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.
This information was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
Over the course of one day, 10,088 pilgrims crossed the state border at border checkpoints. To facilitate the verification and registration of the pilgrims in Uman, law enforcement agencies have set up control points, and there is round-the-clock monitoring at 7 posts in areas with large gatherings of pilgrims.
Videos of Hasidic pilgrims on the streets of Uman are being shared on Telegram channels. Some footage even shows what has been dubbed the “Orthodox Kazantip” – Hasidic dancing to electronic music.
It’s worth noting that from September 11th to 21st, a special entry/exit and movement regime has been established in Uman due to the arrival of Hasidic pilgrims.
Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the Jewish New Year observed by those of the Jewish faith. It falls on the 1st and 2nd days of Tishrei, typically occurring in the period from mid-September to early October. In 2023, it falls on September 15th-17th.
One sect within Judaism, the Bratslav Hasidim, undertake a pilgrimage to Uman during this time because the city is home to the grave of their founder, Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav. Hasidim consider it their duty to visit the tzadik’s grave at least once in their lifetime. They also believe that if they celebrate Rosh Hashanah at his gravesite, the coming year will be a happy one for them. According to the State Ethnic Policy Office, despite the full-scale war in Ukraine, more than 30,000 Hasidim want to come to Uman for Rosh Hashanah.
