November 20, 2023More than 80% of Ukrainians who received refugee status in Germany are not employed.
This was stated by the head of the parliamentary faction of the Christian Social Union, Alexander Dobrindt.
According to the politician, less than 20% of Ukrainians currently living in Germany are employed. Dobrindt noted that in the Netherlands, the employment rate among Ukrainians exceeds 70%, and in Poland, it is even higher.
“This shows that Germany is offering the wrong incentives,” Dobrindt remarked. In the politician’s opinion, the priority should be providing each adult Ukrainian refugee with employment opportunities.
“If they refuse to work, benefits should be reduced,” Dobrindt believes.
They also stated that the situation for Ukrainian refugees in Germany may deteriorate sharply in the near future. Local authorities have set a goal to quickly integrate refugees into the workforce and reduce their reliance on social benefits.
Since the beginning of the summer of 2022, refugees from Ukraine have had a special status in Germany. They receive higher allowances (Bürgergeld) and have broader employment opportunities than asylum seekers from other countries. As of June 2023, there were approximately 480,000 working-age Ukrainian recipients of such benefits.”
