Zelensky angered Trump with his criticism of U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia – The Guardian
February 19, 2025The U.S. and Russia consider elections in Ukraine a key condition for the success of the settlement process. At the same time, Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin “believe the chances of the current Ukrainian president being re-elected are low.”
This was reported by Fox News journalist Jackie Heinrich on social media platform X, citing diplomatic sources.
Trump is “prepared to accept any election result,” including the possibility of a pro-Russian candidate winning, Heinrich stated, citing Ukrainian sources.
According to the journalist, Putin also sees this outcome as likely and is convinced that “any candidate other than the current president of Ukraine will be more flexible and willing to negotiate and make concessions.”
Previously, multiple sources reported that Trump is proposing the following scenario for Ukraine: first, a ceasefire is declared, then elections are held, and only in the third stage is a final peace agreement signed with the newly elected president.
Western media, including Reuters, have described this exact sequence as a potential path to ending the war. This was also mentioned in Trump’s previously reported but unofficially confirmed “peace plan,” which suggested that a ceasefire could be in place by Easter, with the electoral process beginning in August.
Meanwhile, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko recently announced that Ukraine’s next presidential election is scheduled for October 26, 2025.
