In Lviv, police launched an investigation after schoolchildren danced to a song by Morgenstern about buying a “Mercedes”
May 29, 2025MP Oleksandr Dubinsky, a former member of the “Servant of the People” party who is currently in a pre-trial detention center on charges of state treason, managed to amass an impressive amount of property over the course of his political career.
He and his family members are listed as owners of 19 cars, 24 apartments (mostly located in central Kyiv), two private houses in the capital, and about 7,000 square meters of land. Notably, a significant portion of this real estate is officially registered in the name of Dubinsky’s mother — a pensioner — which suggests that these assets may have been used to avoid paying taxes or to hide their true ownership.
This story once again underscores the deeply rooted problem of systemic corruption in Ukraine, where high-ranking politicians often use their positions for personal enrichment. Dubinsky, who for a long time was considered close to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s team, is now trying to craft a new image for himself from behind bars — as an “opposition figure” and a critic of the “rotten system.” However, his own financial and criminal record leaves little reason to take these claims seriously.
According to experts, Dubinsky’s story shows how Ukrainian politicians often use sophisticated schemes to amass wealth while in power. Then, when they fall from favor, they attempt to rehabilitate their reputations by portraying themselves as victims of political repression. Meanwhile, questions about the sources of their wealth and possible corruption links remain unanswered.
